10:15 - 11:00 Game Design Basics: What is in a story?
Many game designers have taken different approaches to game design. Great graphics, amazing game controls, beautiful story, immersive music, etc. But is there a flow to these choices in the design process? In this presentation we will explore some of the best games who have won awards or great reviews and come up with a flowchart that should help put you on track to develop the next big hit.
    Christian Beauclair, Microsoft
Christian is a hardcore gamer who's been playing games since he was 16. He has worked as a game software evaluator for 8 years prior to his joining Microsoft. In his current role, he spends a lot of time talking to schools about XNA Game Studio 3.1 and the Indy Game market.

    11:00 - 11:45 "Wouldn't it be cool if"....Putting together a game pitch.
Pitching a game idea often starts with a basic concept and a pitch document. In this presentation I will share some of our experiences putting together, and receiving successful (and unsuccessful) game pitches over the years. I will share some tips on making a game concept or demo appealing, and walk through an example pitch document, explaining the different pieces of information we use to convey your great game idea to a publisher or even your own development team.
    Antonio Santamaria, Artech Studios

11:45 - 12:30 Business, Technology and Marketing of Middleware Software for Games
We describe Exocortex Technologies background, the problem were are solving, an overview of the technology with examples, our value proposition, the target market, the reasons for our success to date, and the lessons we have learned. The lessons we have learned will be helpful to anyone looking to enter the game business.

13:30 - 14:15 The changing face of the game: How game design is at the leading edge of Human Computer Interaction
Many of the new and exciting ways of interacting with computers are emerging from the game design field. Because of the rigorous requirements of gaming, games are often the ideal arena in which to cultivate and test new and emerging technologies. In this talk we will look at some of the past, present and future innovations in HCI that have been driven by gaming.

14:15 - 15:00 Can a Video Game Save a Life? -- Serious Games and Serious Education
Over the past 3 years BlackCherry Digital Media, in partnership with the Mushkegowuk Cree of Northern Ontario and Carleton University have been working to create an online resource, pathoftheelders.com, which is set to launch March 24th, 2010. The main goal of this project is to teach cultural history to Cree youth but the deeper goal is to have an impact on the appalling suicide rate among aboriginal youth. This presentation will focus on the genesis, motivations and goals of the project, the challenges facing serious game designers and some of the lessons learned from this undertaking.

15:15 - 16:00 Who Needs Buttons Anyway? Transitioning to a Touchscreen
The mobile industry is a fast evolving machine. From the Apple iPhone to the BlackBerry Storm, many of the newest devices dispose of the old keyboard and directional pad input in favour of a simple touchscreen. But what does that mean for games? We'll discuss the major issues with the lack of a control mechanism, compare some possible implementations and see why it's more than handling a few new events.
    Ryan Henry, Magmic

    16:00 - 16:45 Avatar: The Game
    Brent George, Ubisoft
With 14 years of experience, Brent George is no stranger to the animation industry. Brent had spent time in commercial, television, and film production before enthusiastically transitioning into a professional role in one of his favourite past times, the game industry. After giving a peak at what life is like working as an Animation Director for one of the world's premiere game development studios, Brent will entertain us with some anecdotes from his most recent adventures working on James Cameron's Avatar: The Game.

What is the Global Game Jam?

In a Game Jam, artists, programmers, and designers come together to make video games. Each participant works in a small team (3 to 5 people) on a complete game project over the course of a limited time period, usually over a weekend. In this year's Global Game Jam, people all over the world meet at more than 130 different sites to jam simultaneously!

    Important Notes

    • Participation is open to everybody and is not limited to students
    • Teams are formed at the start of the Jam. You may plan your team ahead or just show up and form one
    • Individual registration is necessary (See below)
    • Games will be designed based on a theme to be announced at the start of the Jam
    • There is no restriction on the language/platform/etc (See below for available tools)

    How It Works

Everyone meets at their local Game Jam on Friday, January 29, 2010. Doors will be shut promptly at 5:00pm. Local Organizers will then share the constraints, rules, and the theme for the Game Jam. Everyone will have 15 minutes to come up with a pitch and then share it with the group. Teams will then be formed; no one leaves until everyone is a part of a team. Teams are free to use the space at the host venue. Each team will have until 3:00PM on Sunday, January 31st to create their game. The local jurors will then go around and play all the games and at 5:00pm, each team will present their game to all participants. Each Local Jam will announce what team best embodies the spirit of the jam. All finished games will be archived onto the Global Game Jam website for all to play.

Participation is free. Competition will happen in Azrieli Pavilion, Carleton University. Computers with common programming and multimedia software and internet access, and also access to rest area and food to buy (and some free meals) will be provided.

    What is it?

Carleton Univeristy Library, in conjunction with the School of Information Technology and the School of Computer Science are working towards the creation of a Video Game Research Collection in the Department of Archives and Research Collections. This collection will allow the study and use of legacy video game technologies. We are looking for your help!

    How to Donate?

Contact Dr. Anthony Whitehead at the following email address if you would like to donate

awhitehe AT connect DOT carleton DOT ca

    $(this).corner("20px");

    How it Works

In this effort we are looking to collect any legacy consoles (Atari 2600, Intellivision, Colecovision, Nintendo NES, GameBoy, Commodore, Amiga and any not listed here), their cartridges, software and peripherals. We are hoping that you will scour your basements, garages and other areas to find and DONATE this equipment to our effort. All equipment will be accepted at the Game Day event and will be tested, cleaned up and will make up the Game Research Collection and will be housed permanently in the Carleton Library. Please bring out your old unused gaming equipment... and contribute to learning in this area of research.
